Let’s face it. Sometimes it seems like everyone around you is succeeding in the marketplace, and you’re left standing still. While that may or may not be the reality, there is a way to jumpstart your business. It involves connecting with other professionals in your industry, individuals who can share their expertise in a way that benefits your bottom line. PEGs, or profit enhancement groups, are the brainchild of the Management Growth Institute, Inc. (MGI), and they’ve been around since 1976. Here at Fireproof Records, we’ve been participating in the program for about five years. Last week, Fireproof CEO Mike James lent his expertise to yet another PEG at BIS (Business Information Solutions) in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Joining him for his inaugural PEG was Roy Radigan, who heads up Fireproof’s Cleveland operation.

PEG’s provide essential information for business growth through participating in a directed process fueled by CEO’s with similar businesses. Groups consist of 10 CEOs from non-competing businesses, and meetings take place throughout the year at members’ businesses. The primary objective of the PEG is to carefully critique a business, and then offer feedback and suggestions for improving current outcomes. The great thing about PEG’s is that everyone comes out ahead. Business owners learn from the input of experts in their field, while participants can share their expertise and learn from the expertise of their colleagues. It’s about sharing honest, knowledgeable, industry-specific information and experience in a friendly, trustworthy environment. In the end, members glean new ideas to boost their businesses.

How do business professionals stay informed on industry trends?

Well, here at Fireproof, we participate in a Profit Enhancement Group (PEG). This group is led by the Management Growth Institute (MGI) and brings together eight to ten records management CEOs to investigate, collaborate, discover and recommend ways for companies to improve their profits.

Each PEG meets at a different member’s business location twice a year to evaluate their operation. At the host’s facilities, the group director assigns members to teams, and guides them through a two-day evaluation and reviews the critiques.

During the evaluation, members spend a rigorous day interviewing employees, investigating far corners of warehouses, understanding systems and procedures and watching the business in action. The magic of this organization happens as members present their reports; detailing data found, perspective changes and additions.

As the host reviews member recommendations, solutions fall into place. The host benefits from the peer reviews and is able to pinpoint any gaps, overlaps and other potential organizational issues.

We recently attended a session at the National Archives and Records Administration facility. This facility is where the IRS and other departments store their records. This is a very impressive facility.

Fireproof has been a member of this organization for over three years and every year we learn innovative strategies and new industry perspectives. We can’t wait for our next session!
