Is Your Medical Practice Ready For The EMR Mandate

Posted under Document ImagingurlRecords Management by blogadmin on June 2, 2010

As of 2006, less than 10 percent of hospitals had a fully integrated system and less than 21 percent of office-based physicians were using electronic medical record (EMR) systems in 2008.

However, the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (Stimulus Bill) has upped the ante for those leading the charge for electronic medical records.  The bill includes incentives – up to $44,000 per doctor, as well as penalties – reduced Medicare payments to encourage participation. To enforce this bill, Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, has a presidential mandate to oversee and strategically manage the implementation and compliance of electronic health record (EHR) systems nationwide.

Is your medical practice ready to go electronic? Are you ready to image all of your documents?

Before implementing your EMR/HER systems, here are a few items to consider.

  1. How will the implementation of EMR affect your current staff and daily workload?
  2. If you scan in-house, what type of scanner do you need?
  3. How will you store the electronic records?
  4. Are you going to outsource the imaging and storing of all your documents?
  5. Are you going to scan all past and current documents?
  6. How will you determine the workflow/process of your operation post EMR?

Storing paper records has been a long-standing tradition and the gradual replacement by computer-based records will take some time and adjustments.

Fireproof offers a number of services to help you accomplish your EMR/EHR needs. For in-house operations, we offer a wide range of scanners. We will work with you to develop an imaging plan for your current and past records. Once images are prepped, scanned and indexed they are stored on our ImageSilo system. Our ImageSilo system provides you instant, secure online access to your documents anywhere, at any time.
